Editorial: A Conspiracy in North America

by Jose Cortes Jr.

Pastor Jose Cortes Jr

What if our Adventist Churches across North America began a conspiracy? What if we decided in harmony with all the other churches across Bermuda, Canada, United States and the islands of Guam and Micronesia that we are going to love our cities like Jesus did? What do you think would happen if we ventured outside the walls of our churches, asked people about their needs, and did something transformational for individuals and communities?

What if our local churches conspired together to do the following?

Compassion Boston-10,000 Meals

Written by Olivia Ruiz-Knott, Communication Manager, Compassion Boston

You receive a hair net and gloves, then are assigned to one of the five long tables set up in the open room. The room is bustling with activity-people scooping food, sticking labels, sealing bags, and packing boxes. You're given the task of scooping a cup of rice into the little plastic bags making their way down the assembly line. Before you get it, dehydrated vegetables, a vitamin packet, soy protein, and beans have been scooped into each bag by other church members helping along the line. By the time you finish, you and those around you will have packed 45 boxes of those bags, containing 10,000 meals to be distributed to local shelters, soup kitchens, and food pantries. Read More...

Evangelism Shark Tank - Over $120,000.00 Given Out for Innovative Evangelism Initiatives

Over $120,000.00 were distributed to the 15 brave, innovative, passionate about outreach Pastors and Finalists of the Evangelism Shark Tank, during the CALLED Ministerial Convention in Austin. The finalists had been chosen from a very large group of applicants prior to the Convention.

Each night of the convention, 5 Pastors, from across the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists, presented their innovative and compassionate Transformational Evangelism initiatives to a ballroom filled with colleagues and family members, including Conference and Union Presidents, and North American Division leaders, who came to support them.

They also presented to and were grilled with difficult and important questions by the five judges, also known as the Evangelism Sharks, who ultimately scored each initiative and decided on the five winners for each night. The Judges were: Kumar Dixit (British Columbia Conference), Roger Hernandez (Southern Union), Sung Kwon (North American Division), Tara VinCross (REACH, Columbia Union), and Jesse Wilson (Oakwood College).

On the last session of the CALLED Convention, Pastor Jose Cortes Jr., NAD Associate Ministerial Director for Evangelism, presented each one of the Finalists with a giant check, which they took back to their local churches to implement the initiatives presented during the Evangelism Shark Tank.

Following is a list of the 15 Finalists and the Awards:

Transformational Evangelism Funds - Up to $50,000.00

Transformational Evangelism Funding is available for innovative, grace-oriented, and incarnational initiatives which take into account the needs of the community and involve ways to address them with the Compassion of Jesus. The funding is for initiatives proposing a sustainable cycle, and a tangible transformation of lives, rather than a one-time evangelism event. Project proposals will need to be submitted through the local Union. Applications will be accepted by NAD as long as funds are available.
