Women Clergy Tell Their Stories
At the 2012 Women Clergy Conference dozens of pastors were asked to share their story of how God called them into ministry. Their stories were recorded and are being posted on this webpage. This page also contains other testimonies of women in leadership and how they experienced the call of God. Let them share with you their call to ministry by clicking on a photo or text below.
Chanda M. Nunes Chanda is the associate pastor in Kansas City, Kansas. She served as associate pastor for youth, evangelism and outreach, and chaplain of the boarding academy and elementary school (2003-2005) in Canada 2008-2010. She is the associate pastor for evangelism, outreach and young adult ministry. She was recently commissioned in October 2011.
Elina Camarena As of April 2012, Elina, a Cuban-American, is married to Carlos Camarena, with whom she enjoys working in their two-church district. She is the associate pastor at the Paradise Valley Spanish Church in San Diego and the Vista Spanish Church in Vista, California. Elina has four children: Elina, married and working in Nebraska; Carlos, married and working in Hawaii; Paul, a senior at La Sierra University; and Mark, a 10th-grader at Escondido Adventist Academy; and also has two beautiful grandchildren,
Lizeth Hernandez As of April 2012, Lizeth has been pastor in Petersburg, Arkansas, for the last 15 months, as well as executive director at KRSA radio and host of her own morning talk show. From Gilroy, California, she obtained her BA in theology, with emphasis in pastoral ministry, from Pacific Union College in 2009.
Gayle Lasher As of April 2012, Gayle serves as senior pastor of New Life Adventist Ministry, a brand-new church plant in Fife, Washington. This constitutes her current passion, as she and her team have been working together since October, watching the Lord begin and develop this wonderful new church community. Gayle previously served the Washington Conference in western Washington as Bible work trainer/coordinator, serving the 100 churches and companies of the Conference.
Marilyn Scott As of April 2012, Marilyn is associate pastor for children and women’s ministries of the Spencerville Church in Maryland. She is the pastoral advisor for Kingdom Kids Sabbath School divisions, from birth through fifth grade, and pastor for the Spencerville Polar Cubs Adventurer Club, with 104 members. Other areas she advises are: Community Services, Deaconesses, Discover Bible School, Salt Shakers, and teaching ministries.
Collette Pekar As of April 2012, Collette has co-pastored the Brunswick Church with her husband, Mark, for 18 years and is chaplain at Parkview Adventist Medical Center, leading a team of staff chaplains and volunteers. She holds a BA in theology from Walla Walla College and an MDiv from Andrews University. She served the Upper Columbia Conference from 1981 to 1994, and then the Northern New England Conference. Collette is passionate about developing teams of Christians from all denominations to serve those in need.
Buffy Halvorsen As of April 2012, Buffy serves as the pastor for marriage and family ministries at the College View Church on the campus of Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska. She has been in team ministry with her husband, Ron Halvorsen Jr., since they began their ministry in Florida in 1985. However, it wasn’t until officially joining the church staff at the Keene, Texas, Church on the campus of Southwestern Adventist University in 2000 that she finally got a stipend and the title of pastor.
Therezinha Barbalho As of April 2012, Therezinha has served as the senior pastor of the Richmond Brazilian Church in the Potomac Conference since July 2009. She began pastoral ministry in 2004 in the Newark Luzo-Brazilian Church of the New Jersey Conference. She has a passion for evangelism and community services.
